We have what we call brown board. Brown board can be used for many things including barn wood flooring. Brown board is boards that come from the interior of a barn. It will have a rustic, honey brown patina and will show nail holes and saw marks. We have mostly pine, but some oak as well. Our brown board barn wood flooring generally comes random width (approx. 6-12”), random length (approx. 4-14’), and does vary in thickness from 5/8” to 1 ¼”. We can plane our barn wood flooring on one side to a consistent thickness, usually ¾”. Planning will leave one side with a clean surface and the other side with a rough surface. Most people show the rough side. However, we do have some clients that use the planed side for a smoother floor. Brown board barn wood flooring comes directly from the barn and has not been kiln dried or treated in any way. That is not to say that our brown board isn’t dry, it’s has had 100-150 yrs. to dry out. It can also come dirty as well, dirt, sand, hay, manure, etc. Sounds appealing doesn’t it? For installation, we recommend ripping the edges as you go, to ensure that the boards lay nice next to each other and to ensure consistency in widths. You can either side-nail or face-nail these boards.
We also have brown board that has been milled into flooring. As with the first option, it will have a rustic, honey brown patina and will show nail holes and saw marks. It comes tongue and groove and relief cut on the back, and has been kiln dried. It has also been skim-planed on the front. Skim-planning removes good amount of the roughness, but leaves most of the old patina and saw marks. You can choose your width from 2”-8” wide and comes random length 4-14’ and is ¾” thick. Our milled brown board flooring can come in oak or pine.
For both options, we suggest light sanding until you achieve desired smoothness. You can finish with a tongue oil or polyurethane. We recommend using caution with any stain. Be sure to test first.
We recommend ordering 15-20% extra for waste with both options.
